Wait, hold on! NO this is not scientific mumbo jumbo, just some definitions of words you might not understand. We want all of our customers to be the most educated and aware customers EVER. Call us, anyone from our trained staff can fully explain these terms in full, and probably better than this web page can!

What is down? Down is the soft; three dimensional, fluffy plumes that grow under the outer layer of down (mainly on the breast) of geese. It grows in clusters and contains millions of filaments vitiating out from a central quill point (similar to a dandelion pod) that intertwine with each other and expands to from air pockets. The air trapped in these pockets is what makes down the warmest, lightest natural insulator and provides “fill power” in a comforter. What is Fill Power? Fill Power is the ability of the down clusters to loft or expand to a given volume and fill empty space-this is the way down insulates. Fill Power is determined by compressing air once of down and letting it expand for 72 hours. The volume the down fills when it expands is measured in cubic inches. A fill power of 600 means that one-ounce of fully expanded down fills 600 cubic inches. A good range for a comforter is 550- 600. The higher the fill power the better the insulation ability and the less chance for cold spots, area without down. What is thread count? Thread Count will determine the lifespan of your
comforter. Note those above 400, are cloth woven from twisted yarn and
counted on the double. A 270-350 thread count single yarn will weave a
nice tight, smooth cloth while the so called 540-700 are of twisted yarn
resulting in a looser weave and ultimately leakage of down should be expected.
What is Baffled box construction? Baffled box construction is generally regarded as the very best for a down comforter. A baffle is a strip of fabric, usually 1-½ inches wide, separating the quilt channels; it can be compared to a wall that separates the compartments. Instead of sewing the two layers of ticking together, the Baffle (the wall) is inserted to each layer of fabric so that the down is given the ability to expand and achieve maximum loft. What does the word Cambric mean? Cambric is defined as a finely woven white linen or cotton fabric. For instance, our 100% Egyptian Cotton that DownTown Company uses in producing their Down Comforters and Pillows. Egyptian cotton is recognized the world over as a finely woven fabric that adheres to strict quality control measures. Why is Hungarian Down the Best? The Hungarian "Pusztas" cool weather encourages geese to produce down with maximum insulating capacity. Our careful hand gathering allows selection of the finest down, separating it from inferior material right from the start. Such high quality gathering is found in only a few places
around the world, and in Hungary it is guaranteed. Our Hungarian down
comes from older birds. Seven months old is best. It is perfect for loft
producing qualities of superior down. The excellence of which is unmatched in American made
or other European down products. More demand has created more down producers,
and telling the difference between their products isn't always easy. But
it is important. Our Down products have MADE IN HUNGARY at the bottom of the law label, thus assuring you that our down products are filled in Hungary and that the down used is only Hungarian down. Yes, you can tell the nationality of down--- Is this Down really Hypo-allergenic? I am purchasing a down comforter for the first time, what weights should I look for? If this was a game show you would be dismissed. You do not purchase a down comforter based on weight! This is an utter marketing ploy to simplify your purchase decision into buying an inferior down product! Feathers weigh more than down.. so you lift up a down comforter and say to yourself.. hmmm... heavy.. equals warm.... WRRRRRROOOONNNGGGG! Feathers have quils that add weight, but do not not increase warmth. Only high quality down can produce the warmth that you need. But what if you live in Florida... or Vermont... Central Air.. all kinds of variables! See what those marketing fools did to the down product industry! Confused? Please call us, 803.348.7715 anyone here will explain this in full. Can I use down in the Summer Months? Yes!!!! Down insulates while being virtually as light as air, and conforms to the body for maximum insulting effect. It adjusts to your body temperature and even in the summer months is a delight because it breathes and acts in reverse-keeping warm air out and cool air in. What is Lyocell? Lyocell is the newest pure natural fiber, made from wood cellulose. It is extracted from wood in an environmentally friendly process and sets new luxury standards of quality in down comforter shell and in all natural comforters. Lyocell is echo-friendly, 100% biodegradable. |
