The Measures of Quality
It is simply wrong to judge down by the "weight" of a finished down piece. What matters is the amount of insulating power you get per ounce. This is indicated by "loft". Which varies with the down's ability to trap air and insulate. Down "fills" can vary greatly, and it all depends on how much loft they offer. To measure loft, down is compressed in a cylinder under controlled conditons. The amount of expansion after 72 hours indicates its measure of fill power. The more the resiliency, the better the down will insulate...and the better it will feel. |
